After reaching the second Excalibur-filler episode of Soul Eater, I decided to take a break from Soul Eater for a while (that damn holy sword really manages to be insanely annoying!) and started on Code Geass R2. And it immediately sucked me in (again). I freaking love watching two antagonists with strong world beliefs go at each other – the pleasure I get from watching Lelouche and Suzaku is very similar to the feeling I get with Light from Death Note. As bad as Light is, you can’t fault him for not going all out on what he believes in. And in my book determination and all-out action are what elevates characters to serious badass-ness.

For me Lelouche and Suzaku are even more interesting to watch in terms of how their conflicting motives interweave and play out, and I love watching them interact with all the side characters. This series constantly amazes me in how it weaves in such a large complex cast without losing the audience’s interest in any of the side characters. I also really admire the series’ cajones in ruthlessly disposing of characters when needed. I remember being tremendously upset over Euphemia’s death in Season 1, but I have to say that was one of the most memorable deaths I’ve ever witnessed both in terms of how it happened and the rippling after-effects which are still continuing. I mean, If you have to go out, you might as well go out with a huge and lasting bang right? ;)

Anyways, to finally get to what prompted me to write this entry… I got to episode 8 and just had to crack up at the V for Vendetta ploy that Lelouche pulled to get all the Dark Knights/(incriminated) Japanese out of Britannia.

The screenshot below is small so it’s a little hard to see, but look! Even the doggie (bottom right) is a Zero!

Looking back, this was a pretty clever (and successful) move on Lelouche’s part to get all his accomplices and sympathizers out of the empire’s way. Still, I can’t help but wonder if the producers saw V for Vendetta and liked the final scenes of the movie so much that they just HAD to work it in to R2. There are some good plot parallels that could be drawn between V and Code Geass, but I will admit the overall effect was rather distracting.

Anyhow, I’m a bit under halfway into Code Geass R2 and I can’t wait to find out what happens next! It’s always a good sign when I semi-marathon series… otherwise with my short span of attention and long to-watch list, the chances of me finishing a “dropped” series becomes incredibly slim. With the end of the Olympics :( you can be sure that I’ll be marathoning through episodes to see Lelouche’s next move on the giant chess board of Code Geass xD
